Toyota Installs a New Safety Feature

18 February, 2010, 10:10 IST by Payal Pathak

All Toyota vehicles available worldwide will have a new safety system dubbed the Brake Override System. The new system will cut off engine power if accelerator and brake pedals are applied at the same time. Toyota has also formed a quality control committee as “Special Committee for Global Quality”. The committee will have one Chief Quality Control officer for each major geographical location. The committee will be personally headed by Toyota President Toyoda. The committee will have its first meeting on March 30th.

Toyoda also stated that he will not be attending the US congressional hearing coming up shortly. He appeared assured about the scenario and stated "I trust that our officials in the US will amply answer the questions." He stated that he intends to focus his energies on improving quality worldwide. However, he also affirmed that he will appear for the hearing if summoned.

Meanwhile, Toyota received yet another blow when it recalled its sub-compact Corolla models after receiving complaints about power steering problems

NEW safety system? But how do it know? It is guessing of course. Toyota does not even admit to a problem yet sees fit to issue a solution. Errors can creep into the system at a multitude of points so how does Toyota know how to sequence a "solution" into the system. It does not know and cannot know, of course. So driver complaints continue even after all the "fixes." Toyota claims that there are relatively few people being killed due to their software defects, but how do they know how many people are being killed in single vehicle defects where there are no survivors and all the emergency response teams find is dead bodies and law enforcement closes the investigation by declaring the driver must have fallen asleep or suffered a medical problem or else was driving unsafely in any event. Where is the satisfaction in that? Dead drivers spend eternity knowing that they have been denied justice.
