Top 10 cars delivering the highest fuel economy in India
Fuel efficiency has always been a top concern for Indian car buyers over the years. It is aptly summarised in the Maruti Suzuki television commercial, where it is stated 'Kitna deti hai'. More customers are buying diesel powered vehicles these days, as these vehicles are more fuel efficient than petrol variants. For your benefit, CarTrade brings to you a list of cars giving the best mileage in India.
At the top of the charts is the diesel-powered Honda Amaze, which was recently launched on April 11. Almost 500 units of this vehicle have already been sold. This car delivers a segment-leading mileage of 25.8 kmpl. It is the first entry level sedan ever manufactured by Honda Cars India and is priced between Rs. 5.99 lakh to Rs. 7.60 lakh for the diesel version. In addition, the petrol version of this car also comes with an optional automatic transmission.
Till the time Honda Amaze was released, Chevrolet Beat diesel was the most fuel efficient vehicle in the country, delivering 25.4 kmpl. It has the revolutionary muscular looks of the petrol version, with a cockpit-like interior design. The Beat diesel produces a power output of 57.5 bhp, which is sufficient for a vehicle of its size. Most experts have stated that despite being a diesel vehicle, it is quite peppy to drive. However, the vehicle could do with some reduction in engine clatter noise.
Tata Motors has two entries in our top ten list of the most fuel efficient vehicles. One of these is the Indica CR4, which is fitted with a revolutionary new CR4 engine. Not only does this deliver greater mileage, but also generates lower emissions than other Indica models. A 1.4 litre diesel engine in this vehicle produces a power output of 70 bhp and a mileage of 25 kmpl.
Japanese manufacturer Toyota has manufactured the Etios Liva hatchback specifically for the price-conscious buyers of India. Though the car has not managed to sell in numbers as high as Maruti Swift and Hyundai i10, it still has its fair share of fan following. The diesel variant of the Liva, with a power output of 79 bhp, produces a mileage of 23.59 kmpl. Additionally, it is also available in seven attractive colour shades.
Tata Nano, being the most affordable car in the world, also marks its entry into this list, with a fuel efficiency of 23.4 kmpl. This small car was a dream for company’s ex-Chairman Ratan Tata, who wished to gift Indians a 'Rs. 1 lakh car.' Though sales of the Nano touched a high point of 8,000 vehicles in a month during 2012, numbers have subsequently dropped in the last few months. Tata Motors plans to revive these by launching diesel and CNG versions of the Nano. Interestingly, Nano is one of the few petrol vehicles in this list.
Maruti Suzuki is the country's largest seller of hatchback vehicles. The Alto 800 has refined the winning formula adapted by the Alto, in a new avatar. It is fitted with a 796 cc engine that generates a power output of 47 bhp and a peak torque of 69 Nm. The car also comes with a CNG option and while the petrol version gives 22.7 kmpl, the CNG gives a high fuel efficiency of 30.4 kmpl. In addition the LXI model of this vehicle comes fitted with an airbag.
In the entry sedan segment, there is strong competition between the Swift DZire and the Honda Amaze. A mileage rally was recently conducted by Maruti for this vehicle, wherein mileage greater than the 23 kmpl certified by ARAI was achieved.
Maruti's largest selling premium hatchback Swift also generates high mileage. Its 1.3 litre diesel engine gives a fuel economy of 19 kmpl in the city. The new Swift also looks better than its previous version, with new headlamps, fog lights and an automatic climate control system.
The Micra was one of Nissan;s most ambitious launches for India and it has live up to the same. The car is available in both in diesel and petrol versions in the country. It gets keyless entry along with Push Button Start/Stop system, Electronic power steering and a powerful music system. Mileage of the petrol version stands at 18.06 kmpl, while the diesel powered version generates 23.06 kmpl.
Volkswagen Polo is a large size family hatchback, suitable for long drives. At the moment, it is the only hatchback in Volkswagen's Indian product portfolio. However, Volkswagen Up!, another hatchback, is expected to be released later in 2013. The petrol version of the Polo, with a 1.2 litre engine, gives a mileage of 17.04 kmpl. But at above Rs. 5 lakh, this option is generally more expensive than others in the list.
