Tata Motors has initiated trial production of the world’s cheapest car at its mother plant in Sanand in Gujarat. The first batch of Nano rolled out last week. Tata Nano is testing production of 50 cars per day at its Sanand plant initially. The commercial production of the car will begin from April this year. “Trial production has begun at Sanand, and we expect commercial production to start here by April,” Mr P. M. Telang, Managing Director, India Operations. “This will ease the delivery position on bookings that have been made so far, he added.
On the other hand, company’s official spokesperson declined to confirm any news on trial production and stated that the company will commence production of cars between January and March 2010.
Tata Motors shifted its mother plant from West Bengal to Gujarat last year facing severe protests from the local farmers led by opposition leader Mamta Banerjee. Currently it is producing the model from its Uttarakhand unit in Pantnagar. Tata Motors commenced deliveries of its model from July 2009 and intends to complete the wait list by end of this year. “We have cleared around 30 per cent of the wait-list, and expect to clear the rest before the year-end,” said Telang. The company had accepted one lakh bookings in the first phase.
