Special Coverage: Women’s Car Rally, Indore
March 14th 2010 could have been yet another Sunday in Indore but for the Women’s Car Rally. So much of euphoria, fun, frolic, excitement and participation from all the women drivers and their support teams was something unimaginable! Not until I reached the venue, did I realise that this was not small event with few enthusiastic event managers trying to cajole some women driver’ to rally around the city.
It was a huge list of more than 170 teams that were bubbling with enthusiasm to participate in Women’s Car Rally in Indore. The rally was flagged off from Silver Spring’s township on the Bypass road where the participants were marking their entries in long queues since 7 am in the morning. The basic requirement was to have woman driver behind the wheel and the rest of the team can be anyone from friends and family.
If you thought it was only young girls in jeans who were ready to wheel around the city, think again. Women of all age including elderly ones were equally enthusiastic and had taken active participation in the event. Since the team could also have male members, husbands, sons, friends, family and even young sons were there to support their moms, sisters and aunts. Although the event was supremely dominant by women participants but the overall scenario definitely looked like a families and friends having some cool fun.
The rally was not a race but actually a treasure hunt rally where the women drivers had to hunt for the total 5 spots in the city with the clues given at each spot. At each spot they had to complete a given task with the support of their team members. Once the task was completed, it had to be submitted at the next spot hidden in the clues given. Teams had to finish the all five tasks submit them at the next point as quickly as possible.
There were two more contests at the Rally – “The Best Team Name” and “the Best Looking Car Contest”. Teams had come up with some cool and funky team names such as Avenger, Jhansi Fighter, Four Musketeers, Women Rocks, Super Women, Duronto Daminis, Speed Racers, Silver Spring Roadies, Global Warriors, Road Runners, Hot Chilly Racers, and the list is endless.
Although there were several cars that were not “dressed” for the Best Looking Car content, most of the teams had taken special efforts to participate in the Best Looking Car Contest. Teams had chosen some cool and contemporary themes of Save the Girl Child, Go Green, Save Tigers, Conserve Water, NASA, Spirit of Indian Women and even Women’s Reservation Bill.
The whole event was definitely quite exhausting as the day seemed to be nearly over when the rally ended. However, the fun and the enthusiasm were still very much alive. There was lunch for every one and attractive participation gifts apart from the cash first prize of Rs. 50,000, second prize of Rs. 35,000 and third prize of Rs. 25000.
The next most awaited Women’s Car Rally will be held in Delhi from DLF Place Saket on 2nd April 2010. The rally will be a mega event much larger than the one held in Indore. It will cover track from Delhi – Jaipur – Delhi and any car with woman behind the wheel will be eligible. The proceeds of the rally will be utilised for further awareness programs on Breast Cancer Prevention and its Early Detection.
We all await this mega event to be held next month!

To begin with we appreciate your response to the rally. The whole idea of putting this rally together was to celebrate the spirit of participation and Women's Day and also to provide a platform for the contestants to enjoy. Firstly with regard to your queries and dissatisfaction, since the rally was held within city parameters the safety of the contestants was of prime concern, hence it became imperative that traffic rules and regulations had to be followed. Further on judging of the winners was totally non- biased and was based on the timings noted at the start point and the various check points. Regarding the selection of the best car design and the best name, the panel of judges had no knowledge of whom the cars belonged to prior to judging. Further adding the parameters of judging were 1) originality 2) thought behind the idea 3) use of recourses 4) design sense and more, negative marking was also there based on the maintenance of the car and designs hampering traffic rules. We hope the above answers your queries. We once again thank you for participation and wish you luck for the next rally. Team D Force.

Pls. don't call it rally, it was just a race. Because there were driving rules regulations about time & speed but they were all for the formality it was seen that the car reached on the destination point in less time has got the first prize. It was just a bluff that given task has also to be complete. I had also joined the rally with one of my friend that's why I had obesrvered it minutely. Also there was cheating in selecting good looking car. As per design, idea, looking & creativity the car no. 8 was perfect in all manner but prize is given to students of NIFD institute. NIFD was one of the sponser of the rally. As per rules family members of Sponsers should not participate in the contest.
