Premier Rio Launched in India

October 29, 2009, 10:10 IST by Satish Kalepu

Premier Auto Limited, the company that once owned the prestigious Fiat Premier Padmini brand, has re-entered the Indian market with its SUV Rio priced at Rs. 5.25 lakh ex-showroom, Pune. It is an attractively priced mini diesel SUV ready to take on Maruti Gypsy & Scorpio base variants. It can also be termed as an alternative to B-segment hatchback models for those who wish to taste the driving pleasures of an SUV.

Premier Rio will be available at 20 dealerships across India that will be different from those that currently sell Premier’s commercial vehicles – the Roadstar and the Sigma.

The SUV model has been developed by kits supplied from the Chinese manufacturer Zoyte and is based on first generation Daihatsu Terios. Premier Ltd. will also source 20%-25% of the parts for the Rio from Indian suppliers. Rio’s is powered by an engine with a capacity of 1490cc that develops 65 bhp of peak power. The Rio will be offered in three trims. Vaiant EX is priced at Rs 5.25 lakh while the DX at Rs 5.50 lakh and LX at Rs 5.95 lakh - all ex-showroom, Pune.

“We will be targeting fun-loving small families for their multi-purpose use with Rio. It is placed between the mid-sized passenger car and larger utility vehicles,” said company spokesperson.

  • Premier & China , both unreliable. dangerous combination. I would be first buyer of such a vehicle from some reliable manufacturer but this two baap re baap. Also why not more powerful / efficient engine? 1500 cc diesel engine & 65 BHP? Fiat multijet / Quadrajet 1248 cc is 75 BHP ( Vista , Swift , Ritz , Punto).

  • Why is the government allowing diesel engined vehicles for private use, knowing that diesel is subsidized and more polluting than petrol?

  • Interesting fusion. It looks like a Maruti Alto strapped on a higher wheel base. But I would say its value for money at~5lac for an SUV. Not sure if it could compete with Scorpio though,in terms of looks and feel of an SUV.

  • This is called "kahani mein twist". If the car is even half decent, then i think it will make a big hit. Its a great concept to come out with a mini SUV. With the space shrinking in our cities, we will soon be seeing all segments offering a scaled down version such as this. Would be interesting to see the specifications of this car though.
