New SUV in India from BMW

30 November, 2009, 10:10 IST by Satish Kalepu

Something is brewing at BMW India. It is already a leader in its segment but that does not make it rest in peace. Now the company is ready to launch a new small SUV for the luxury car buyers in India. The car is ready to compete with Honda, Toyota, in models like CRV, Fortuner, Captiva, Pajero, Outlander, etc. The latest product from BMW is X1 crossover which is a compact SUV.

BMW India spokesperson said that it is planning to launch the X1 model in India but that will not be soon. It is coming in 2011 and will be the smallest and the cheapest model from BMW priced at Rs. 25-35 lakh. BMW has already worked on the right-hand drive model to make it suitable for the Indian market. Luxury car lovers may expect to see the model at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo although there is no confirmation about the same from BMW regarding its preview.

BMW X1 will feature rear-wheel drive with 1.8L petrol engine. Other engine options available will be 2.0L diesel, 2.3L diesel and 2.8L petrol engine. Currently X3 is the smallest SUV from BMW priced at Rs 40 lakh which is imported as a completely built unit from Germany. Luxury car segment is already witnessing a boom in India and nearly every luxury car maker has expected 100% growth on year-on-year basis. This festive season has been especially remarkable for everyone considering last year’s when the economy was in doldrums.
