New Maruti Cervo – Expected Price Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh

February 05, 2010, 10:10 IST by Payal Pathak

Maruti 800 will not be viable for sale in Indian market after April 2010 when the new emission norms come into force. Maruti Suzuki India is now said to replace the model with new small car model – Maruti Cervo. Maruti has ensured that the new car gives extremely tough competition to all other existing and upcoming small car models in India.

The new Maruti Cervo will possess 660 cc engine sporting power of 54 bhp. The 5-door car model will be the cheapest offering from Maruti Suzuki priced at Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh. The car is also expected to be a perfect challenger to Tata Nano which is currently the cheapest car available around the world.

The new Maruti features 4 speed auto gearbox, a K6A DOHC engine with VVT and Bluetooth capability. It will have interiors similar to Maruti Swift with enough head space, leg room and comfortable boot space. The car is expected in the Indian market in the second quarter of the year. The final pictures of the car and its interiors have not been revealed by the company so far.

  • On 7th July, I wrote in the same coloumn, about Maruti 800, should not be discontinued but change the engine K series,660cc,and make the suspension better, and sell the same, as the spareparts are easily available and Service from Mechanics also are available throughout India. MARUTI has not taken the decision when 3 years back, I gave them the same solutin to Beat NANO..... Dr PC Rao,Pune 7 Dec 2010

  • The essentila reason why the 800 is still popular as seen by the resale transactions, is that the spare parts are very cheap compared to ALTO. If Maruti is to really cash in on a segment which is looking for a low cost car it does not mean low initial cost alone -it means a low spares cost also and this can be leveraged wherever the spares are identical to that of M 800. If MUL comes out with any car where the spares are really low cost since lots of ancillary manufacturers are there it will sell nay outsell the guys who are offering 3 year all inclusive warranties as the public are slow to change loyalties from Maruti ....... • Maruti has been the leader of small car markets and also the proud maker of Maruti 800. Maruti Suzuki Cervo is usually a 5 door hatchback design along with spacious passenger cabin and will probably be equipped together with the .7L, 660cc petrol motor which is actually capable in order to create maximum power regarding 60bhp. This valuable power-plant provides peppy overall performance by way of excellent energy effectiveness.

  • When will be the booking of Marthi Cervo in Indian market???

  • I requested Maruti about two or three years ago, when Nano was being talked about to use the same Maruti 800 but use a smaller engine of 600 cc which was available in Japan, and price it just below Nano I lakh on road price, since the spare parts of maruti 800 was plenty in the market, and also there were Plenty of Mechanics who can repair. They did not hear to my request and they informed me that they are not interested to compete with Nano at that time, but now they thought that as their market share is coming down, they want to bring CERVOS.?? They should use most of the Maruti 800 spares in Cervos, and make it around one Lakh or less on road. ( like Battery, wheels, tyres, and many electrical spares, plus the brakes, and clutch, and the drive train. The outer shell must be new to get a new face, but the heart and many other items, they should try to fix the same old Maruti spares of 800,which is very easily available in the market. • Jitesh U worked for 10 years and now Maruti has planned to come out with small car in Price range of Rs. 1.5 to 2 Lacs. Were they sleeping all this time or did Tata Motors wake them up from deep slumber ??? Maruti 800 should have sold for Rs.70,000/- then Tpday everybody wants to come out with Small car??? Truth is Ratan Tata and his Team has shown the WORLD that India can manufacture a car for the masses at 1 lac and so many cars coming on the road is proof.

    April 08, 2010 by  Sapphire
  • The features of Maruti Cervo seems to be good compare to Nano though the price is little bit high. But for indian markets nothing can beat with Maruti as it is the zero maitainence vechile always. A TRUE LOYALITY TO THE INDIAN CUSTOMER FOR THE VALUE WE PAY.

  • So Maruti is coming out with a small car to compete with Nano ??? Why were they sleeping all these years ??? Hats of to Ratan Tata and his Team at Tata Motors for venturing out and coming out with NANO.

    March 10, 2010 by  Sadanand
  • I would like to request please dont compare two good things. Tata has done very good job with Nano but i am afraid of nano's future in next five six years. Do you thing that we are ready to scrap a car in few year or this car is ready to perform for next ten years NO. So it will be better if to make robust design not only a cheap design.

    February 25, 2010 by  Lokesh
  • ash you said it right, the whole Nano incident smelled rotten, and the companies you mentioned surely had a hand in it. Dr Rao all these years maruti has been selling crap cars and making money out of us Indians. You should be supporting Tata who came out with a brilliant car like Nano which the whole world appreciated as a engineering marvel. Anyways crap begets crap.

    February 24, 2010 by  Ashu
  • I really appreciate and welcome this new concept of Maruti Nano. However I believe that the name shouldn't be Nano, instead Maruti can come up with a new name that competes the word Nano itself... :)

  • Tata Nano should do a Gruelling trial to prove it is a better vehicle than Maruti 800. I remember Maruti 800 came sucessful in Guiness Book of Records race in Australia some years back. I have my own doubts whether the vehicle can stand the strain.Let Tata show this. Dr P C Rao, Green Activist, Pune 7 19Feb10

  • I do not know whether Suzuki Cervos was a failure in Japan.? Anyhow it will be good if that 660cc K series engine is fitted and instead of 4speed, I suggest 5 speed, which Maruti 800 brought out earlier to be matched to this 660cc to give an average of 23 Kmpl under standard conditions, and use lot of Alto parts, which will be cheaper in the long run,as many vehicles are there, especially the Rim,Tyres,Battery, lights, and AC units, brakes, and clutch system so that maintenance of Cervos will be cheaper. They should price the basic Model like Nano 0NE LAKH or equal to Nano price or little less and People will buy for its better look and not look like a GO KART which the present Nano looks like, especially the Scooter wheels,it is apalling. And finally a good shape like i20 will be the best, but the Weights of the Bare car should be reasonably designed for 600Kgs or less or equivalent to Nano weight. That is how the competition should work. A good Problem to Designers and marketing people. Dr P C Rao, Auto Green Strategist,PUNE 13 Feb 2010.

  • DEAR ITS A OLD CAR IN JAPAN AND BECAUSE OF ITS FAILIURIN JAPAN FORM PAST 10 YERRS, THEY WANT TO OFFLOAD MILLLINS OF DOLLER INVETRY IN INDIA SO THAT THEY CAN AT LEAST COVER UP THERI DEFFICIAT FOR THE PRODUCT. THATS THEY MAIN REASEAN OF REMOVING MARTUI 800 PRODUCTION FROM APRIL 2010 AND INTRODUSING THIS FAILED CAR TO INDIAN MARKET.

    February 08, 2010 by  SUNNY
  • @ pradeep Cervo is an old car in japan,, nd its not a grt invension.cervo dont hav de market in japan so dey want to dump here and de maruti making it cheap by removing some facilties from de car.and the on road price is almost equal to 800. but the small car credit completely goes to Mr.Ratan. still i remember his words "WE ARE NOT BUSINESSMEN, WE ARE INDUSTRIALISTS ".

    February 07, 2010 by  Victor
  • well then what will happen to the msruthi 800 in msrket will the goverment will ban them from plying in roads.

  • Being one of the Interested Parties in DELAYING the Progress of the Nano from Singur;& Sponsoring Mamta's Movement against the Tatas,Maruti always were to come out with a Cheap Car,no matter what they had claimed earlier. It does not make much Business Sense,if they Spend MOney & get No Returns !Anyway, the Consumers shall have more choices now, with Bajaj(Another Guilty Party)-Renault come out with their small car too.

  • Its a interesting development. It will be more interesting to see how Tata motors deals with competition for Nano

  • Good Show. I expected this last two years back when I asked Maruti to come out with this same engine 600cc around to be fitted in Maruti and lower the price for 1 Lakh to beat Nano competition. They informed that they are not interested in this as they do not want to compete with Nano. But now they feel that they can come out with this . Still they can fit this smaller engine which may pass the present standards of BS 4 and upgrade it to 5 or 6. If they have a similar K series in this smaller capacity it is good. All further spare parts should be priced similarly to 800 price and especially the tyres and fast moving spares to get the all india availability at cheapest price.

  • Various companies are working on cheap cars, but the credit for all this goes to TATA- NANO, which has forced other companies to try to give cheap cars for Indian Market. It was Ratan Tata's vision to make a cheap car for the Indian masses which has forced others to do like wise.

  • Suzuki kept this development a secret from the general public and did not even make a noise about the Cervo in the recent Auto Expo at Delhi. But full credit to them- they know the pulse of the Indian buyer and are hitting Tatas in the solar plexus with this offerring.Hope it can take the summer well and give good air conditioning. There is no mention of the other variants of the car. Let us keep our fingers crossed.
