New Fuel Cell-Powered Commercial Vehicles from Tata Motors

15 February, 2010, 10:10 IST by Payal Pathak

Tata Motors has developed fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles like light trucks and buses. The company is currently testing the feasibility of these vehicles which are undergoing a trial run at European Technical Center. “We are looking to run a fleet of fuel cell vehicles to gain experience of how they actually work in operation. That will be a stage prior to considering production,” said John Richmond, Group Chief Engineer, Tata Motors Europe. However, there is no official information from the company regarding development of such eco-friendly products.

Hydrogen powered vehicles are known to be the most eco-friendly modes of transport as they emit only water vapors. The fuel cells take the hydro-carbon fuel and oxygen from air to produce electricity that powers the electric motor in the car. Tata Motors has been seriously pursuing alternatively technology methods to power its vehicles. The new fuel-cell technology vehicles are in line with its strategy to develop vehicle that run on alternative fuel technologies like bio-diesel, ethanol, hybrid, electricity and fuel cells.
