Maruti Eeco Turns Out to be Maruti Omni Upgrade for Customers

January 15, 2010, 10:10 IST by Payal Pathak

There had been a constant demand from the customers to upgrade the existing Maruti Omni model. The demand has been duly met with the launch of new Maruti Eeco and Maruti Suzuki hopes to hard sell Eeco family car as the most favorable option.

"We have seen demand for Eeco growing since its launch last week from users of Omni and new customers looking for a family car, with more space, more leg-room and greater comfort," said CV Raman, Maruti's chief general manager for engineering research, design and development.

There had been several multi-utility vehicles launched in India in past 25 years but Maruti Omni has remained unbeatable and irreplaceable since it was first launched in 1985. Customers had been constantly exchanging their old vans with newer versions and Eeco comes as fine replacement for the same.

“The demand for swapping an Omni van with Eeco is an encouraging sign for us to pitch for more bookings," Raman said. "About 30 per cent of Omni customers have been exchanging their old vans with newer versions during the last two decades. We see this trend continuing with the launch of Eeco.”

The car has 90 percent localization and has been designed and developed at MSIL’s Gurgaon plant. Although Maruti Omni has been more of a commercial vehicle and Eeco is being positioned as a family car, nevertheless MSIL finds encouraging demand in the market.

  • I took my brand new Eeco for a 1600km trip immediately after the home delivery by Pratham Motors. We were at heights ranging from 4000ft to 8000ft. in the Nilgiri and Munnar ghats. http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-drive s-initial-ownership-reports/83627-maruti- eeco-came-home-2.html The above pics were shot at Devikulam, 5400ft MSL - the board was there but we missed taking a pic of it. Eeco performance: The Eeco ran very well at the heights, for a brand new car. The Odo was 900kms after delivery. We were smack in the middle of the Monsoon and were very lucky for the hole-in-the sky that gave a chance for those wonderful pics. The Ghats restricted travel to the 2nd gear most of the time as the rain decided full-time AC. Stability was excellent at the bends - we did more than 130 hairpins in a single day- and could keep up with the Santros and other small and zippy cars driven by in-a-hurry Rally veterans. The Eeco still gave me 14kms to the liter in the ghats and 15+ in the straights! Earlier on , during the 1st 100kms of the drive, I thought the engine was straining at hi-revs. I was wary of this due to some TD reports & reviews that I had read online. It took some time to realize that the engine screamed due to over enthusiastic pumping of the throttle rather than that of 'strain'. There's quite an Oomph in the engine and the Eeco will go quietly if you get the hang of the RPMs and the gear Ratio. No one knows anything about the top secret engine (which is a brand new Maruti R&D product) other than that it is 'aluminum'. I asked the Service engineers from MISL but they too were tight-lipped about it and seemed to discourage any queries. The best part of the Eeco is the AC - it is really the best i have seen for a single AC reaching the back seats ! It was one of the major points for choosing the Vehicle.

  • Dear Debashish , Eeco has 73 bhp with 1200 cc engine . It is quite powerful at that and with the gear ratios well chosen you can push into the fifth gear at as low as 40 kph . The second gear and fifth gear do most of the work . You do not miss the power steering as the steering is quite light and forward tilted than other cars . gettign used to the size of the car takes some time especially while parking in reverse in tight spots . The seven seater variant with Ac may not work because the vents are only in the front . I feel that it is not a replacement for Omni because the five seater is comfortable with large boot space but in case of seven sitter , the boot space is zero and the ac is a problem .

  • I received 5 seater a/c ecco on February 28. The car is spacious , steering is surprisingly light and engine is powerful . Given the height we get a majestic view of the road and at present it is proving to be an attention snatcher in Mumbai .

  • Why is maruthi ecco with out power steering option? If it rolls out with out power steering it is just a modified cheap car of omni.

  • Dear all, we have to wait till all the specifications of eeco to be published, the power, torque, tyre size, and other features like ac,power steering etc

  • Upgrading the Omni to Eeco is a good concept, especially with the earlier Versa configuration, there is a lot of safety to the driver & co-passenger, due to the engine being in front..... The pricing is also a beauty.......... However, an AC variant of the 7 seater should be made available........... Maybe I'm biased because I own a 8 seater Versa and picked it up after owning a Wagon R for 5 years... Couple of clarifications I need is, that are the Eeco variants with power steering & also the engine hp seems to be the same as that of the earlier Versa...........
