January 08, 2010, 10:10 IST by Quraish Umrethi

Maruti Suzuki announced its new multi-purpose vehicle at the Delhi Auto Expo 2010 that will replace Maruti Versa in the Indian market. Maruti has already stopped producing Versa for quite some time now. The new MPV Maruti Eeco is has been designed in-house by Maruti engineers to cater to the demands of Indian customers.

Maruti has announced the introductory pricing of the car which starts at Rs. 2.59 lakh. Maruti has revealed three variants of the model – 5 seater 5 seater standard, 5 seater AC standard, and 7-seater standard. The 5-seater Ac standard model is priced at Rs. 2.85 lakh and the 7-seater model is priced at Rs. 2.79 lakh respectively. Maruti Eeco is priced one lakh lower than its predecessor Versa which had basic price of Rs. 2.56 lakh. “We are offering the special price as many of our customers want to upgrade from our smaller van Omni to a bigger vehicle,” Maruti Suzuki managing director and chief executive Shinzi Nakanishi said at the Eeco launch.

“Maruti Suzuki engineers have specially developed the Eeco, its new powerful engine and a new transmission system to meet the diverse consumer aspirations looking for a vehicle that fits a large family and at the same time provides flexibility for dual use,” Mr Nakanishi added.

  • It is good to get acinstalled in a 7 seater. Else you might get into trouble as RC of your vehicle will show that it is a 5 seater (RTO go by the dealer's invoice).

  • Need actually 7 seater with a/c Eeco but now that Maruti has given no choice, what is better option a) - fit a/c unit in 7 seater OR b) - fit last row seat in 5 seater that is with a/c Also, in case any one knows if there would be any issue in case of option b)while passing the vehicle with RTO? Please post the info. Thanks

  • As ours is joint family we been using Omni since from 1991 with other cars. I not even thought about replacing omni because of it's sitting capacity. Now I am very happy to know that the eeco has all features of omni, I decided to buy it immediatly, it would be more better if it comes with A/c and LPG in 7 seater

  • I own Maruthi Omni and expected from Maruthi, the higher version of Omni which is coming as Eeco the modified version of Versa which is also a good car for family. The Eeco seems to be winning the hearts of the Omni owners as price is also reasonable and many of them are awaiting upgradation of their Omni in the near future.

  • Today i saw this car at Auto Expo Delhi. Nothing great about looks but one must see the price as well ! All looks become old in three months , but money saved matters a lot . It is THE best car introduced in this Expo and Maruti has proved its love for common man once again .

  • It is a very good car for Price and Family. Any Five or Seven seated car that runs on LPG IS WORTH A LOOK.

  • A 1200cc engine with AC at this price ! I think it is THE gift for commomn man with a joint family . Kudos to Maruti. I am not going to buy it ,but i appreciate the spirit behind it. Those who talk of design have gone nuts 'cos there is a Jaguar or yeti for them no?

  • This nothing but cosmetic change of junk and flop model of maruti versa. hence it is not at new entrant to this automobile section

    January 09, 2010 by  Mohan
  • Aas mentioned in above coments its indeed a replacement model for Versa and Omni. It wil be best suited for the people prefering space like in Omni, cheaper price and updated engine.

  • Very disappointed by the looks. Saw the pics on the internet before launch and this is not even close to that.

    January 09, 2010 by  Anand
  • Isn't this the old Versa in a new guise ? I think it is the same vehicle, now with a new K-series engine to conform to emmission norms. Plus, Maruti has "economized" the car as a whole to make it the Omni's replacement ! Typical Maruti launch .. like the 800 sports .. flogging a dead horse again !

  • Maruti has once again disappointed its potential buyers ! While other manufacturers has been launching contemporary models which could stand up to any European design, Maruti has brought out Eeco which is better suited for the 1990s ! Boring, dull and cheap design. It wouldn't be a surprise if they keep losing their Market share in a growing market.
