M&M’s Ssangyong plans to make India its manufacturing & exporting hub

The Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra’s South Korean subsidiary – Ssangyong Motors Co – is planning to establish its manufacturing and exporting base in the Indian auto market. Shifting their manufacturing and production base to the Indian auto market will help the company in lowering down its production cost considerably. The firm plans to invest a sum of $1.2 billion over the period of next three to five years in the development and launch of new products and new variants of existing models.

Speaking to reporters, Choi Jong-sik, Ssangyong's vice-president for sales, said, "If you see manufacturers like Hyundai, they are exporting cars like Santro to many countries; so possibly, we may explore such opportunities in the future. They will be exported as Ssangyong brand." He added that the company knows the cost of manufacturing is lower in India, but the quality should be of international standards.

Meanwhile, the company is all set to launch its Rexton and Kornado C Sports Utility Vehicles in the Indian market. Both of these models will be assembled at the company’s Chakan plant near Pune. Both of these SUVs will be manufactured jointly with its Indian parent Mahindra & Mahindra.

Ssangyong is likely to start exporting its global portfolio SUVs from India to a number of world markets in next few years.

Dear Mahindra & Mahindra, You probably know the difference of Assembling a car and manufacturing a car. A world class car assembler takes minimum 15 years to start manufacturing its own car. India is a big market, and my view is still that whatever you make will be sold in India, So make use of this oppertunity, empower your designers strip down branded products and do your own research and come out with world class cars. You start now and you can manufacture one in 3 years and exprt them in 5 years. You need to have 2 sets of suspension system for the same brand. One thats going to be driven in Indian & similar roads and the other in the roads of middle east (UAE,Oman,Qayar, Kuwat, Saudi), europe, US, China, Korea, Australia and who knows may be you can also sell them in Japan. Cheers
