Hyundai’s New $5000 Car for India

18 September, 2009, 10:10 IST by Satish Kalepu

Hyundai plans to build a brand new small car model for the Indian market which is expected to be priced at $5000 or approx. Rs. 2.5 lakh. The new car will be an 800cc model targeted towards emerging economies and will be manufactured at its Chennai plant in Sriperumbudur. However, the debut is still a few years away.

Hyundai is currently ranked number two amongst all car manufacturers in India and is the largest car exporter. As per the official statement from Hyundai, prices or timeline of launch of the new model are still not clear but the car will be definitely more expensive than Tata Nano, GM India’s new mini car or Bajaj Renault’s ULC. It will be positioned below Hyundai Santro in the Indian market. The vehicle is still under concept stage at Hyundai’s R&D center in Korea. Hyundai’s announcement comes after Maruti’s plans to launch stripped down models of Alto and Bajaj’s announcement of launching new ultra-cheap car with best fuel efficiency in its segment.

In an age of electric cars, hybrid vehicle and alternative fuel technology, small car segment in India and overseas is rapidly growing. Small cars with eco-friendly and fuel-efficient technologies is the new concept ringing in ears of all auto manufacturers.

Pictures of the car are not yet available with us.
