Hummer Sales to End, GM Fails to Sell the Brand to Chinese Buyer

26 February, 2010, 10:10 IST by Payal Pathak

General Motors has decided to end sales of its Hummer brand after its deal to sell the brand to Chinese buyer failed. General Motors will soon begin orderly wind-down of the brand and its operations across the world especially in the US market. “GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner,” said John Smith, Vice President of Corporate Planning and Alliances at General Motors US.

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Company had expressed interest in buying the brand from the American owner. However, as per the company’s latest statement it failed to receive clearance from the regulators in China who are determined to bring down dependence on imported oil and promote more eco-friendly models in the country. However, China's Assistant Commerce Minister Wang Chao denied media reports claiming that Beijing rejected the deal.

General Motors did not state when it will it start shutting down the production of the model. A decision to shut down the brand has now put nearly 3000 jobs at stake in the US.
