Geneva Auto Show has begun at the Geneva Palexpo, a convention centre located next to the Geneva Cointrin International Airport. Auto makers from around the world are flaunting their new generation eco-friendly cars. The sentiments largely revolve around “green cars” such as electric models and hybrid models.
For example, Porsche introduced its hybrid variant of its SUV model Porsche Cayenne S. Porsche also revealed its 918 Spyder Plug-in hybrid powered by a 500-horsepower gasoline V-8 and electric motors on the front and rear axle. Porsche has not confirmed so far if this model will go into production soon but has not denied its production either.
Audi also introduced its two new hybrid variants Audi Q5 hybrid and Audi A8 hybrid model. Audi A8 hybrid is powered by a 2.0 liter TFSI engine and an electric motor with a combined output of 245 horsepower and the car has a 8-speed Triptronic transmission. Audi Q5 has similar engine but delivers 211 hp with its gasoline engine and electric motor. Audi also revealed its Audi RS5 model that will go on sale in the UK market by October this year. It is powered by 4.2 V8 engine that delivers extra 30 bhp delivering full power of 444 bhp.
Toyota intends to bring hybrid variant of all its models by 2020. "Our experience with Prius and other hybrids tells us that market acceptance of hybrids is growing," said Toyota Europea Vice President Andrea Formica.
Nissan also revealed its new small car model Micra built on global V-platform. The car has been specifically designed for the developing market but can be tweaked and refined for more developed markets. Nissan will initially build the car in India, Thailand, Mexico and China.
Volkswagen revealed latest model of its premium SUV VW Touareg that will replace the existing model in the UK market this August. VW Toureg has also gone on sale in the Indian market and a new variant is expected by next year in India as well. The international model features a hybrid variant powered by a gasoline-electric power train.
Ford intends to bring its 5 electric vehicles at the Motor Show across its C, CD and commercial vehicle segment. The models will be available in the European markets by 2013. These electric range of vehicles also include electric variant of Ford Focus to be available in the market by 2012.
