General Motors to Enter Used Car Market
General Motors is planning to enter the used car market in India in next two months. The Indian arm of the company shall make its foray into the used car market of India which presently constitutes of 1.5 million units. It places this project as one of the biggest priorities for the company.
“We are close to finalizing our plans and would be rolling out the initiative in the next 30-60 days,” said Ankush Arora, vice-president for marketing, sales and after sales at General Motors India, or GM India. “With the throughput of our monthly car sales and customer base having increased substantially over the years, I think its very important to be in this business.”
General Motors' showrooms for pre-owned cars shall not be exclusive to company's car but it shall cater to all brands of cars. It plans to retail other car brands as well. Arora commented that this would enable the company to offer broader range to its customers but refrained from commenting on the sales target.
Currently the used car market in India is held by the unorganised segment. The local small car dealers hold 75 percent of the market share in India. GM plans to start with metros by setting up retail outlets in these cities which would be the second in the country after the multi-brand used-car outlet from Mahindra and Mahindra.
