Fiat – Tata Alliance May be Possible for new Fiat Small Car

14 January, 2010, 10:10 IST by Satish Kalepu

Fiat Auto India Limited is seeking support from Tata Motors in producing its small car for the Indian market. Fiat intends to roll out its small car model in the country by 2012. The car will be specifically designed for the Indian market and will be manufactured locally at its Ranjangaon plant near Pune in Maharashtra.

Fiat is currently contemplating its engine options for its India-bound small car model. The engine is expected to be between 900cc to 1200cc and the model may be designed jointly by auto designers in India and Italy. Fiat intends to have nearly 75-80 percent localization of components to make the car price competitive such that it can be placed well below Rs. 4 lakh.

"Tata Motors are our front-end partners in distribution. So we are taking a lot of help from them in taking customer feedback and understanding their needs so that they can be incorporated into the small car," Fiat India Automobiles President and CEO Rajeev Kapoor said.

I want to know more about this joint venture between Fiat and Tata Motors named Fiat Auto India Ltd. This is helping Fiat to penetrate the Indian market. What benefit is Tata Motors deriving from this? Fiat cars are sleek, stylish and appealing whereas Tata cars are ugly, old fashioned, sterotype in design and looks. Why isn't Tata taking help from Fiat in designing its cars? Why is Tata Motors digging its own grave by promoting its competitor in the same segment. Fiat has already got a firm foothold in this country riding piggyback on Tata Motors. Will someone convince me how Tata Motors is benefitting from this joint venture supported with statistical figures?
