Ambassador Coming with a Complete Make Over
If Fiat and Vespa can make a comeback in the Indian market from Italy, then why not the Indian Amby? Hindustan Motors has pledged to give the old Ambassador a complete makeover which includes complete plastic surgery of the model so that it can re-introduce the car in the Indian market. The company hopes that the model will become a bread-earner in next 3-5 years. It is planning to introduce the model with a retro look by 2011.
"The new Amby will have a retro design and sport cutting-edge engineering to compete on comfort and value for money. Overseas experts have been roped in for the metamorphosis. The new version will be ready by January-February 2011 for test trials and is expected to undergo validation by May so that commercial production can begin next July," chairman C K Birla told TOI on the sidelines of the AGM.
Hindustan Motors will keep the original platform but European engineers and auto designers will do a comprehensive re-designing of the model. It will be powered by BS IV-complaint and BS V-ready 1.5 litre and 2 litre diesel as well as petrol engines that are powerful and fuel-efficient. HM intends to introduce a model that will be at par in design and engineering with the existing new age models in the Indian auto market.

WAIT FOREVER Robert and you will still be waiting for this so-called retro Amby while your friends will be zipping by in their trendy new autos. And by the way have you taken your family's opinion on this WAIT decision you have taken? Remember the retro attempt HM did sometime back in collaboration with Manavendra singh? Now what did they call it AVIGO? Did that car take off at all? NO NO NOT AT ALL. Same thing going to happen now with this proposed model also.Remember HM is HQd at KOLKATA- Sleepy and Laid-back.Remember TATA's Singur fiasco? And have you seen the present shape of their Dealerships? Our local dealer hasn't seen a single sale in the last 4 months and has a WINNER rotting in the dealership with no takers.Even the Govt. Babus have shifted their preference from Ambys to other makes. HM has missed the bus and should now concentrate on giving the car a decent burial.DC design had reskinned the Amby a while back befor it did AMBIEROD. The frontal treatment was like the Ambierod's and that car could have achieved respectable production figures had it been done then.I myslf have a 1976 model, dieselized and Mark 4ed but the car stands on my porch except occassinally when I take it out for a spin.Even my chauffeur prefers the newer design cars that I have.

The HM guys have their heads stuck in the sand.Given the assignment DC designs can do wonders on the existing Amby platform as t has shown in the past.HM is dying and they still don't realise it. PITY

Avigo was really a great step in its efforts but i dunno why it was stopped... Iam planning to postpone my plans of purchasing a new car ...hope HM proves .... Cheers....

Wow..!! Gr8 news for all of us..but i really wish they transform it on the lines of honda cars..they are very good in aerodynamics. Add to that a good engine and nothing can prevent the new Amby come barging on Indian roads!!!

Thats interesting... I hope the Overseas Designers dont change the look drastically... the keeping the basic essential look of the Ambi with sme sleek finish and a powerul train would do the trick... Maybe reducing the beefiness of the car.. and making it more Aerodynamic would do the trick... Get it lower and slimmer!!

Wow!! That's a great news. I wouldn't have gone for an other make had I known this earlier... provided if Ambassador is competative enough with the current string of modern cars in look/design, features, comfort, fuel efficient, etc....
