      About BMW M3

      Summary

BMW is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company. The BMW M3 is one of the latest high-performance versions of the BMW 3-Series, developed by BMW’s motorsport division, BMW M. M3 models have been sold all over the world in three body styles: Coupe,Saloon and Convertible. The BMW M3 is the most successful car in touring and grand touring ever, being the only car to have earned titles more than Porsche 911 in Motorsport. The early E30 M3 model was a sports car advertised and campaigned by many companies including Prodrive and AC Schnitzer. The M3 is unique and differs from remaining E30 models in many ways. It is one of the longest running models, having started production in 1985. The previous M3 coupe was produced in Germany in July 2013, but the M3 name will remain in use for the saloon version.

      Exterior

The first thing that comes to notice upon looking at its front view is the large air inlets. This makes it obvious that the BMW M3 Sedan was designed for maximum performance. The LED headlights have a strong, focused beam for use in the dark. Another unique feature is the black double slat, plenty of which is located on the kidney grille, complete with the M emblem. The M3 has some advantages over the other E30 models due to a dozen unique body panels fixed to improve aerodynamics. There are box-flared wheel arches in the front and rear to cover a wider track with larger wheels and tyres. The side view of the car best describes the amalgamation of a four-door sedan and a racing car, with a curved black carbon roofline. This roof gives a lower-slung look to the car and reduces the overall weight and the centre of gravity of the car. The air curtain and air breather are two of the aerodynamic features of the sedan. In the rear, there are two beautiful LED lights and combined with four beveled tailpipes, giving an ominous look to beat other cars on the road both in technology and in design.

      Interior

The interior of the sedan is as beautiful as the exterior is fierce. The motorsport character is brought to the interior designs as well, with the new M seats in their shell shapes and the undeniable M logo. This offers greater stability and ergonomics to the vehicle. Being a motorsport car, there will be some intense driving situations with the sedan. But there is always a direct connection between the driver and the car, especially in the driver orientation giving better control to the driver. There is a great connection between the instrument panel and the central console making the driver the focal point of the cockpit and giving him a racing impulse. The ambience in the car is completely characterised by sportiness and technological advancements. The high-quality aluminum surfaces also give a feel of it being a race car.

      Engine and Transmission

The BMW M3 sedan possesses a 3.0 I M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine. It has both quality, revolutionary features with up to 7600 rpm as well as the superior power that can go up to a maximum of 550 Nm torque. The M engine gives 317 kW or 431 hp and has a fuel consumption of 8.3lit/100km. The engine responds to even a slight touch on the accelerator with sufficient boost and torque as is required in any sports vehicle. This is possible due to the bi-turbo direct fuel injection and typical M fine-tuning. A motor sport-suitable cooling concept is used in this car with additional features such as an additional oil sump cover and an oil drain pump. Several innovations such as the sleeveless construction or a lighter, forged crankshaft improve the lightweight, intelligent concept and also enable improved acceleration and dynamics and lower consumption.

      Performance and Handling

The sedan can accelerate to 100km/hr from a stationary start in just 4.1 seconds due to 7-speed M DCT with Drivelogic. The M Dual Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic is an innovative feature with 7-gear dual-clutch system specially designed for BMW M high-rev engine. There is an automatic gear selection based on the traction involved. Ultra-light materials such as magnesium, aluminium and Carbon fiber reinforced plastics are used in the building of many essential components thus, making the car light in weight. It improves the acceleration as well as braking of the sedan.

      Braking System

Being a racing car, the M3 sedan has an impeccable braking system. With their unbeatable precision, the M Carbon Ceramic brake system and the M compound brakes ensure the best performance. The braking power is more directly enforced through the M Carbon Ceramic brake system. The corrosive tendency of the brakes is low, and it tolerates more heat, thus lasting longer and making the car one of the most durable ones in the motorsport industry.

      Mileage

The 2979 cc Petrol - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 8 kmpl in city and 10 kmpl on highways.

      Safety Features

The control panel is so designed as to give ease of access to the driver in case of an emergency. It is done keeping the driver in central focus. Highly robust, large-volume supporting structures and high-strength steel ensure rigidity and maximum stability to the car and its safety passenger cell.  The impact of the collision is carried away from the passenger cell to the under parts of the car, side members and the roof. A shock absorber is also built in the area between the bumper and the bumper cover, which protects the pedestrians from severe leg injuries in case of an accident.

      Verdict

The BMW M3 sedan is one of the best racing cars to have ever come out of the factory and is still going strong after 30 years of production. For the race drivers and people who love some thrill, this is the best car on the market.  Being small in size also has its advantages in India due to the narrow lanes, and the superior maneuver techniques of the car give it an advantage over other cars.

      Competition

One of the prime competitors of the BMW M3 is the M4 car, which is being designed by BMW to take over M3. Recently the M3 models have grown bigger in size and are less concerned with agility. Rather they have moved towards raw, takedown power. The M4 models are bound to give tough competition especially as they are designed by the same company.

      Pros

      1. Made for races
      2. Suitable for Indian roads
      3. Spacious

      Cons

      1. Burly size

        BMW M3 performs wonders with a 3999cc

        10/03/2011 11:08:28 | Jatin

BMW M3 performs wonders with a 3999cc, 8 cylinder engine that deliver maximum power of 309kw at 8300rpm and maximum torque of 400nm at the rate of 3900rpm. However, the engine can be much better in terms of fuel economy as it can provide city mileage of 8 km per litre and highway mileage of 10 km per litre. I was very satisfied with safety and security measures that include 3 point seat belts, driver passenger air bags with seat occupant detector, Anti lock Braking system, bumper system with interchangeable crumple zones. Moreover, there are features like dynamic break control, dynamic stability control, front and rear head air-bags and side air bags and first aid kit. Being a luxury sedan the car is well tended to provide optimum comfort to the passengers. My driving experience is made easier with the help of various features like air-conditioning system with climate control, power steering, adjustable steering wheel, adjustable driver's seat, tachometer, electric boot opener function and remote locking. The in-cabin entertainment set up is also quite satisfactory with additional gadgets like an audio system with 6CD and MP3 player. Passengers seated at the back need not worry as features like rear arm rest, abundant leg room, rear air-conditioning vents and power windows will bring convenience to their experience.
