History

BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) is a German luxury automobile company, which was founded in 1916. Not just four-wheelers, the company also manufactures motorcycles under its ‘BMW Motorrad’ brand. It is also developing a range of engines to power BMW cars and bikes. Headquartered in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, the maker also owns two famous British brands - MINI and Rolls Royce. The company is also engaged with motor sport activities since the introduction of the first BMW motorcycle in 1923. Moreover, the German carmaker has a history of success in Formula One.

BMW India Pvt Ltd is a fully owned subsidiary of the BMW Group. First entered in 2006, the company’s headquarters are situated in Gurgaon, Haryana and has its local production unit in Chennai. Indian Operations and Executive Managements

The Bavarian car maker appointed Philipp Von Shar as President, BMW Group India. He is responsible for the Group's ( BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce) decision and operations in India. He replaced Andreas Schaaf as President of BMW Group India in October, 2012. Other key person in BMW management is Sharang Rathore, General Manager, Corporate, Diplomatic and Direct Sales.

BMW Group invested 1.8 billion Indian Rupees to set up its manufacturing unit in Chennai was inaugurated on March 27, 2008 by Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of BMW AG. This plant produces a range of BMW car models including 1 Series, 3 Series, 3 Series Gran Turismo, 5 Series, 7 Series, X1, X3, X5 and MINI. This manufacturing facility has the production capacity of 11,000 units per year on a double shift basis.

The company also has auto parts warehouse in Mumbai and dealer organization across all major metro centers in the country. In October, 2014, the German maker achieved a milestone of locally producing 40,000 units of its luxurious cars at its manufacturing unit in Chennai. The 5 Series was the 40,000th car, which was rolled out of the facility in presence of Philipp von Shar and Rober Frittrang (Managing Director, BMW Plant Chennai).

BMW Financial Services India is a fully owned subsidiary of the German maker, and its headquarters are situated in Gurgaon. The company raised its investment to 5.3 billion rupees in 2012 from the 2.3 billion rupees in 2010. The company operates with three business lines - Retail Finance, Commercial Finance and Insurance Solutions. It offers solutions for retail automobile financing for customers and multi-make customers, financing for BMW dealerships and fleet owners. Moreover, it also provides insurance solutions to its customers through its cooperation partner in India.

Products & Services

BMW, the German luxury carmaker, has the second largest dealership network among all the luxury car brands in the Indian market. The company currently has over 40 dealerships spread across all major cities of the country, and is planning to further increase its sales network. Among the three Germans, Mercedes-Benz has the largest dealership network with 80 dealerships spread across the country.

Environmental Initiatives

Keeping the environment in mind, the Bavarian based luxury carmaker is gradually adding hybrid cars in its Indian portfolio. The manufacturer introduced the 7 Series ActiveHybrid in the country in July, 2014. At the 2014 Delhi Motor Show, the company introduced the i-brand and showcased its flagship car- i8 plug-in hybrid. The i8 plug-in-hybrid sportscar has already been launched in our market and it serves as a flagship product. Moreover, the maker is also planning to bring in its i3 pure electric car in our market.

Founder & First Car

Established as a business entity, BMW reorganized as Rapp Motorenweke aircraft manufacturing firm in 1917. By the end of World War I in 1918, the German maker was forced to cease the production of aircraft-engine under Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company then shifted to motorcycle production in 1923 and automobiles in 1928-29. The first BMW car, which was successfully produced and launched, was the Dixi. This car was based on the Austin 7 and licensed from the Austin Motor Company in Birmingham, England.

In 1918, the company introduced its first significant aircraft engine - the BMW IIIa in-line six liquid-cooled engine, which was appreciated for its high-altitude performance. With treaty restrictions lifted, the maker again started producing aircraft engines for Luftwaffe. Its successful World War II engine designs were the BMW 132 and BMW 801 air-cooled radial engines.
