Electric vehicles are eco-friendly, easy to maintain and more economical than the conventional (internal combustion engine-powered) vehicles. This is the reason why they are emerging as a potential alternative of non-renewable fuel resources. The Indian government too has, recently, allocated a budget of Rs.75 crore to promote electric cars in India. The govt has also announced 6% excise duty concession on all green cars. Major automakers are working on this technology; however the Japanese are the most pro-active players in this. A Chinese firm – Coda Automotive - too introduced a fully-electric car in 2012.

Coda – fist electric car from china

Coda, the first electric car from China, is a four-door electric sedan. The vehicle was originally manufactured by an American company - Coda Automotive – that develops lithium-iron phosphate battery systems for cars and power storage utility applications. Coda Automotive re-scheduled deliveries of the vehicles for several times, to ensure its quality. The car was finally launched in March 2012 in the United States. However, 78 units of the vehicle were complained for airbag deployment issues and recalled immediately. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in May 2013 and later sold its leftover assets to Club Auto Sales and Ready Remarketing.

The Coda was designed by an Italian design and engineering company, Pininfarina. The vehicle made its global debut at the 2004 Beiging Auto Show. The company modified its existing petrol-engined vehicle, the Hafei Saibao, to reduce manufacturing cost of the electric car. The electric sedan’s chassis, achieved FMVSS certification, had been modified for better safety.

Powering the Coda is a 31 kWh lithium ion iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery system, largest-in-segment, that delivers an EPA certified combined fuel economy of 73mpg, i.e. 31.03kmpl. It has an electronic speed limit of 85 mph (137 km/h). According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the electric car’s battery pack, 31 kWh lithium ion iron phosphate (LiFePO4), offers a range of 88 mi (142 km).

This battery system is boosted with an active thermal management system, which was claimed to provide a more dependable range and better battery durability than other battery electric vehicles. It has a 6.6 kW on board charger that charges the vehicle faster than the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf. Wearing black-finished alloy wheels, chrome door handles and side mirrors and metallic exterior paints, the sedan looks very premium.

Features like a touch-screen CD player radio, leather seats, eco-friendly cloth seat and an upgraded quality sound system come as standard. Coda cars come loaded with a plenty of safety features such as Anti-lock braking system (ABS), 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC) with traction control, child restrain system and pre-tensioner seat belts. The Coda was offered with a 3-year/ 36,000 mile limited warranty, while the engine and both battery pack options were made available with 5-year/ 60,000 mile and 10-year/ 100,000 mile limited warranty, respectively. We have few electric cars in India such as Mahindra Reva e2o, Toyota Prius etc.
