A considerable number of accidents these days are caused rather by braking or late braking without sufficient force. A drive may fail to apply brakes on time for a number of reasons: he might be too distracted or careless, the visibility might be poor, or the upcoming obstacle is completely unpredictable like a running dog or kid. Normal people are never used to such conditions and end up applying brakes without proper exertion leading to crash or mishaps.

There are a number of car makers who have worked on this and developed suitable automobile technologies. The main aim of all these techniques is to avoid accidents or at least reduce the intensity of damage to a considerable level. These systems are grouped under one single technology called autonomous emergency braking systems where

      • Autonomous refers to a system that acts on its own to avoid or mitigate the severity of accidents.

      • Emergency refers to a system that intervenes only under critical conditions and wouldn’t bother the driver under normal circumstances.

      • Braking refers to a system that keeps away accidents through application of brakes.

Autonomous braking systems help keeping the passengers safe in two important ways. Firstly, these help in avoiding accidents through a prior identification of emergency conditions and taking early action on that. Secondly, these help in reducing the intensity of damage by slowing down the collision speed or by restraining systems and preparing vehicle for the upcoming damage.

Maximum autonomous emergency braking systems use cameras, radars, or lidar-based technology for identifying the probability of crashes and recognizing vehicles that can be responsible for it. The information gathered by these devices help car’s system in knowing the chances of accident through identification of speed and trajectory. In case, it realizes chances of any upcoming collision, the autonomous braking system comes in to play and takes suitable action. First it warns the driver for situation ahead; in case no action is taken it takes the final responsibility over itself and applies emergency brakes as soon as possible. The force of braking varies from system to system.
