Today I am writing about fuel types in India. As I explained last week, diesel and petrol are fuel types where the main difference is defined by the cost of operating. In today's article I will have a look at petrol, diesel, LPG and CNG. Which is better for what? And which should I choose?
Though there are alternative fuels like bio-gas and ethanol, we are not dealing in detail as they are not used in practice due to non-availability in sufficient quantity.
I will write the article as follows: I will compare and score each of the fuel types for the following dimensions:
- Investment
- Running cost
- Maintenance
- Comfort
- Performance
- Environment
- Availability
I will finalize with a conclusion.
Investment
Of the fuel types mentioned, we can easily state that petrol engine is the cheapest. This is because the petrol engine is the base engine and simplest one. CNG and LPG both require minor engine modifications. The diesel engine is technically more complex than the petrol engine and hence also more expensive.
For diesel engines, the design has to be adapted taking into account the nature of diesel, which requires higher compression ratio for compression ignition to take place. Hence a diesel engine may be anywhere around a lakh rupees more expensive than a petrol engine.
LPG and CNG are highly combustible, and hence the engine inherent technology does not need fundamental changes. For installing LPG or CNG kit, the initial investment requires app Rs 40,000 for CNG and Rs 20,000 for LPG. This would include the fitment of cylinder and modification of the engine and starting system accordingly.

Running cost
The running costs of different fuel types, is determined by the cost per liter/kg of the fuel, and the mileage of the same.
The cost of petrol ranges from around Rs 50 per liter, though it differs slightly in different regions of India. The cost of diesel is around Rs 38 per liter. The increased cost of petrol and diesel has led to a search for other alternatives, LPG and CNG. The cost of CNG per KG is around Rs 18 and that of LPG around Rs 25 per Kg.

Now we have to consider the mileage of the car. Mileages vary a lot according to the specific model, engine, and driving behavior. So we will use general average figures here.
With petrol in any good car, the expected mileage is around 15 KMPL on an average and hence the cost per KM will be Rs 3.3 (Rs 50 divided by 15). With diesel, assuming an average mileage of 17 KMPL, the cost per KM will be Rs 2.3. With LPG costing around 25 Rs per KG and with a mileage of 300 KM per 14KG, the cost per KM will be Rs 1.15 (one KG takes you 300/14 KM).
For CNG, the mileage is similar to LPG and hence the cost per KM is

Maintenance
Purchasing a car, is a start of a long relationship. Besides normal running costs, the car will also require regular maintenance, and this differs per fuel type.
Maintenance is mainly of two types - periodic (or scheduled) maintenance and breakdown maintenance. Periodic maintenance requires the replacing of all oils, worn-out parts, as per the expected good life of the same.
Breakdown maintenance is the replacement of damaged or failed parts or any other type of problems that arise suddenly.
The fact that petrol engine parts are cheaper than diesel engine parts make petrol engines cheaper for regular maintenance. Comparatively, diesel engines maintenance are costlier.
Another important point to consider, is the frequency of repair which depends highly upon the quality of manufacture. LPG/CNG fitments require frequent checkup of the connections. Hence, even though regular maintenance cost is quite cheap, it will be done frequently. Also, for these engines, the cost of repairs will increase significantly with problems arising in head assy. Moreover, when the fitting has been poorly, maintenance expenses will spiral quickly.

Comfort
To evaluate the comfort of the car, from a fuel perspective, we must consider the smoothness and ease of operation.
Petrol engines are well recognized for its smoother operation, relative quietness and good acceleration. Diesel engines on the other hand are quite noisy, have slower pickup and frequent cold starting problems.
With connection of LPG and CNG, problems are reported for foul smell, cold starting problems. Moreover, extra space is required for fitting of the tank which otherwise could be used for carrying bags and other goods.

Performance
The parameters for deciding performance of any car are power developed for given capacity of engine, pickup, and stability in long and continuous usage.
Petrol engines have an advantage over other fuels in terms of faster pickup and power. Diesel engines accelerate slowly and are more suitable for long usages. LPG/CNG fitments suffer from a slight lack of initial pickup, but accelerate faster than their diesel brethren.
All in all, however, we can say that for city usage, we will not notice differences in performance for these fuel types.

Environment
Nowadays, environmental impact of a fuel type is considered during the purchase process. This is more so with the recent attention for global warming and the like. All the fuel types discussed here have different environment effects.
The effect of usage of each fuel depends upon the chemical content of fuel and the emission after combustion. Here, petrol has the disadvantage of emitting carbon monoxide, which is a very poisonous gas. The petrol engine’s exhaust smoke is invisible but it is quite a dangerous gas which also contributes for global warming.
Diesel, though it emits dusty gas, has more environment friendly emissions than petrol. Diesel fumes do not contain certain harmful gases present in petrol fumes.
Nonetheless, LPG/CNG are much more environmental friendly. This is caused because it is completely combusted and produces a clean exhaust gas.

Availability
If we look at the availability of the fuel, we must look at two things – local availability (how easy can I fill my tank) and global availability.
Although all fuels are from extracted from fossil fuels, the global availability of each fuel is a major deciding factor for the price and limitations of usage. In India, there is scarcity in petrol and diesel, while there is a huge demand for the same. Major reserves of fuel are imported from Gulf countries and hence our local price of petrol and diesel are directly dependent upon international market price for petrol and diesel. This price is influenced by geopolitical events.
LPG, CNG and its related products are needed to a large extent for domestic requirements and hence the government has to put regulations for utilization of the same for commercial purpose. Still, a large amount of it is produced in India and since the demand is relatively small, the risk of price shocks is smaller.
As far as local availability goes, petrol and diesel are easily available at all gas stations. However, not all of them carry LPG or CNG. Moreover, the availability of LPG and CNG are regionally different. In the North of India, CNG is predominant (there is no LPG in New Delhi) – but in the South, LPG is preferred.
Hence we can state, that the local availability of LPG and CNG is somewhat limited and may occasionally cause problems if not well planned.

Conclusions
As explained in the last paragraph, usually in certain areas either of CNG or LPG is available. Hence, for users, the choice is generally between diesel, petrol or CNG (for North India) or diesel, petrol or LPG (for South India).
Combining the tables, we see the following:

Now, I have left the conclusion column empty on purpose. Why? Because, this depends completely on your personal preferences. Do you want a speedy, fast car? Then petrol is the way to go. Are you nuts about the environment? CNG and LPG are for you.
Do you want economy with carefree ownership? Then diesel would be most likely be better for you.
In general, based on the comparative study of each type of engine including their performances, availability of fuel, cost of fuel, etc., petrol engines are the best for cars for private usage and diesel engines for commercial, regular long drives. The availability and environmental friendly nature of LPG/CNG makes it the best alternative fuel.
It is also important to note that there is a general trend towards cleaner fuels and reducing the dependence on diesel and petrol. Hence manufacturers are working seriously on the technicalities of the vehicles, so as to make it perform best with alternative fuels like LPG/CNG etc. This means that the attractiveness of these fuels will increase further in the future.
I would like to make the following notes to this article. While I have tried to rank and score the different fuel types in general, such rankings can differ across manufacturers, usage, and geography. Please also understand that a complete and thorough analysis of these fuel types will be a book on itself!

It will be great if India focuses on Diesel cars like Chevrolet Beat, as Indians are fed of rinsig petrol prices and there is no hope of any slowing down in this petrol prices so its better to switch to diesel oriented automotive. It is also very economical and environment friendly.

Dear Shiva,Extremely helpful article keep it up, thanks. thi is a kind of personal question. I own a Indigo GLX 2004 (Petrol) It gives me really low mileage of around 10 KMPL In city (PETROL). I have fitted LPG Kit and the average is still around 11 Km in same conditions. current price of LPG is approx. 40 RS/Ltr. This totals to about 4 RS/KM. Which is really high compared to Diesel car. Now I am making my mind to fit it with CNG. And the question is that would spending 30,000/- more is beneficial or a waste.

Nice article....Well, I myself have been considering buying a new car - not very expensive, good looking, economical to run - and I have found of all the cars, Chevy Beat LT LPG to be the one I was looking for.....it has the most modern technology of LPG engines available in Indian market (as of March 2011)....gorgeous sporty looks....sexy interiors....and it looks the best in Green colour (I mean its design looks most attractive in Green) - so, I have booked one for me - I am sure my choice is good.....

Sir,I am confused to your comment that 'going in petrol vehicle costs equal to hiring a cab so what is that you are gaining 'I do not know where you are residing but in Kolkata, if you hire a Taxi, then per KM rate is Rs. 10.00 plus certain additional charges which will roughly become Rs.11.00. During night time after 22 hours, additional night charges you have to pay. So hiring a car is much more costlier than owning even a petrol car.

Hi Shiva,The article was really informative. I am planning to buy a car in next few weeks and am completely confused, my budget is around 5 lakhs and after doing much research i decided either to go for Maruti Ritz or Chevrolet Beat...my first reference will be Ritz reason because of the brand name and service stations low maintenance cost etc....but at the same time Beat has tempted me a lot especially because of its looks and the maintenance plan which the company offers now a days.. which is maintenance free for 3 years it is 50k cheaper to Ritz little cramped up but spacious enough to hold family of four...now i read abut CNG cars which are environment friendly and cheaper in terms of fuel consumption...also point to be noted is i will be basically using my car only on weekends for approx 40 to 50 km every weekend..so which car would you suggest...i would appreciate your reply.RegardsManoj

Absolutely correct Harish. The LPG per km figures tend to decrease even more than 2-3 km depending on the car. I had used a ZEN lpg. This car gave me 18 kmpl on petrol but only 12 kmpl on lpg even after tuning it a number of times with the best lpg retro-fitters in Bombay. That is a considerable difference.

Absoutely correct Harish. The LPG per km figures tend to decrease even more than 2-3 km depending on the car.

Note the lpg price has gone up from 25 to 34 as of today but the petrol prices have only marginally increased.

It's a superb posting. I really appreciate the facts and figures mentioned here. But I do have one concern, as you mentioned in cost per KM table, 21 KM/ 1 KG Gas. I guess this is bit hard to believe. Even in M800, it would give 15-16 KM maximum/ 1ltr LPG. Then cost per KM would be around 2.5 RS. Correct me if I am wrong.

i recently installed a lpg kit with LAMDA sysytem of unitax co. (ARAI approved)in AVEO retrofitted by eco gas badarpur, New delhi but i m not satisfied on lpg. The running on lpg is not smooth. Please advise me ?

Hi,Sushil Kumar Going for company fitted CNG has advantage of better safety norms, modification and service back up for relative repairs.BUT at higher price tag ( there will be slight difference say about 5k or so maximum). However if fitted from authorised cng fitment dealers also the safety norms will be taken care of and performance is also good but in case of problems in engine arising due to fitment the dealer service people would charge more for the vehicles with fittment from outside.The solution is if you are preferring authorised service then go for the compamy fitted CNG versions only.

Thanks for your valuable information. Actually, I am planning to buy a small car. I am a bit confused, b/w a new company fitted CNG car or a second hand car. The company is charging around Rs40- 50k extra for CNG model. On the other hand, the local dealers in market are charging Rs20- 25K for CNG conversion, which is almost half. I am concerned about safety measures,thinking from all prospectives.Please help.

Both LPG and CNG can be fitted to petrol cars. LPG/CNG kit can be fitted to Nano also but here Space constraint is there.Placing the Cylinder in suitable position away from heat as much as possible will be a difficult task.

Thanks for nice article , I would like to share my experience that I am using Swift Vxi on Auto LPG and its working absolutely fine,actually no power loss and better mileage of 15 Km/Litr of LPG,always filling at LPG dispensing pump of reliance or aegis.Its really economical and no maintanence till date since OCT-2008 and done 14000 Km on Lpg.Ultimately its economy of diesel at comfort of petrol.

I have been using CNG in bombay since 9 years now.... all my cars are CNG..... it doesn't damage the engine as to how people say...... it is very economical (better than any fuel). It cost 1/4 of petrol so you can recover the cost of the kit in the first 10000-12000KMNow the kits are so good that the pick up is also not affected much. I have a SX4 CNG and it rocks.......

In Delhi now 65 to 70% Private vehicles are running on Dual mode (Petrol & CNG). CNG for first and Petrol for emergency. CNG giving better mileage (1Rs. Per KM) and low maintenance. Environment friendly the most IMP. So everybody should prefer CNG vehicles. :) :) :)

hi prashantnot really, i am located near india gate & drive down to work to faridabad daily (25kms one way - 1hr). my daily drive is a good mix of the city stop n go & the relatively faster NH2 (national highway#2). i think we shud say that the swift petrol engine, which i believe originally belongs to fiat is doing good work.....

TJ Arun,Fantastic average dude....But then again...You're again referring to NCR region where roads do not have traffic woes as much as the city region does....so the average you state is comparable to that on the highways friend. While I am referring to average received on cars in the city (with AC).

Shiva,You missed few points in your homework.....Now a days diesel engines are far better in performance than petrol engines.For example take a look at Hyundai Verna with 1.6 petrol and 1.5 diesel.....drive to see the difference.Look at these DICOR/CRDI and multijet diesel engines which are at least twice in performance if compared to the same capacity petrol engine..

Yes, u did good excercise but cost of petrol pinches everyday whereas diesel engine pinches only once when u are in the showroom to make the payment of a diesel version. What shall I like is: pinched only once instead of burning blood alongwith petrol on daily basis. More over, today diesel is a maintenance free. I use Verna diesel of Hyundai, and believe, absolutely maintenance free car AND pick-up is pick-up in real sense that beats petrol version of any make. I am diesel lover, hence may streight away appreciate it. Please note that if we gave 1 lack bugs extra for a Diesel version, I shall get back at the time of resale which shall be 1 lack higher than a petrol version. See for example FORD petrol: no buyer, FORD Diesel: still easier to get good resale value, certainly 1 lack more than a petrol version. Now u delete extra 1 lack cost of Diesel version and than re-analyse.

Shiva,I am using Lpg fitted vehicle from last 5 years,to correct you LPG gas is in form of liquid when filled hence it is sold in litres not kilos & average of LPG car is slightly less (1 or 2 Km) compared to per litre.I dont know how u have calculated the LPG average

Shiva,I am not an auto expert. Having said that I keep myself updated with atleast the basic info on cars out of sheer interest.I think some of these figures you have taken into account are just not correct.For example.....Most of us drive the cars in the city and not on the highways...I am yet to see a petrol car give an average of 15 kmpl in the city.....most petrol cars give averages between 8-10 kmpl. Amongst the Diesel cars an average of anything between 15-17 kmpl is understandable and normally received too.Also the fact that today engines such as CRDI etc offer exceptionally low noise and smooth drive...The pickup also sometimes makes it becomes difficult comparing whether you are sitting in a petrol or diesel car.I FEEL THAT THOUGH THE VIEW IS INTERESTING BUT THERE IS SEEMS TO BE BIAS IN THE WAY IT HAS BEEN GIVEN...... I think you need to be fair when you give out such figures.Cheers!!!

Nice article, and quite detailed. But it fails to take into account the rapid strides made by diesel engines in the last few years. Not only are diesels much quieter and vibration free these days, they are also cleaner burning engines in comparison to what they used to be. Also, the torque generated by a diesel engine is much higher, giving plenty of pulling power even to a small car. Many people with larger families, who are used to loading their cars for every trip will find diesel engines very pleasing performers. The use of an AC usually puts a strain on a petrol engine due to this reason, while it hardly makes a difference to a diesel engine.There is no direct and simple choice for any sort of technology, but the one figure that really comes into cost is running cost. People who drive less than 50-60 km a day will find petrol cars the cheapest.
