Hi ! I recently graduated from high school to college. Since I need to commute 10-15 km daily, I am planning to buy a used motorcycle, preferably a Bajaj Pulsar. What all points should I keep in mind before buying the same?

It is not advisable to buy a used motorcycle. However, if the budget does not allow a new bike, do check for sure whether the vehicle has ever been in an accident. Never buy a motorcycle that has survived a crash. Check the bike and its frame, for any sign of rust, which indicates that the bike has not been well maintained. Check if all the electricals are working fine and if the battery is in a good condition.

To ensure your safety, take a close look at the tires on the bike. Older tires tend to wear off and become hard, thus, losing their grip. Make sure that the Bajaj Pulsar you are going to purchase sports relatively new tyres, if not, ask for replacement tyres. Another thing you must check for is whether the fuel tank has any sort of rusting. It is crucial since rusting on the tank tends to let in gas which may cause harm to the powertrain.

You must ask the current owner of the bike to provide you with the service history and details of the model. This is to ensure that proper care of the bike has been taken by the owner. Check the chassis number of the motorcycle and make sure that it matches that on the registration document of the vehicle and the owner details.

Ask for a test ride as that is the best way to check the condition of the motorcycle. Inspect whether the gears and clutch are shifting smoothly during the ride. The clutch should not slip and the gears must not stick. Also take a look at the fumes emitted while running, black smoke may indicate problems with the powertrain.

Before making the purchase, make sure all the documents and papers of the bike viz. registration, insurance etc. are in order and are legitimate. Do not buy a model that has been used by multiple owners in the past, prefer a single person used model.
