I have just purchased the new Mahindra XUV 500. I would like to know how to handle the car for the first few months so as to ensure better maintenance. What is meant by 'breaking-in of a new car'?

Buying a new car is always a great experience, especially when it is one of the country's most sought-after and best-selling cars. However, you need to keep few points in mind to ensure better life of the new car. The first and the foremost thing is-go easy on the powertrain, do not rev it unnecessarily. Drive the car gently without throttling it above 80 kmph.

If you have not already done so, do take some time off and go through the entire contents of the driver manual that comes with your new Mahindra XUV 500. Several experts from the auto industry and Mahindra & Mahindra have spent significant time over the manual, which should be able to answer most of your basic queries. There must be a break-in period mentioned for the XUV 500 in the booklet and the recommendations that you need to follow.

Breaking-in period of the car generally means driving the car gently for the first few months or couple of months, whichever exhausts first. During this period, the rough edges of the car particularly in the powertrain get worn off and the car gets acclimatised to your driving pattern. However, most new cars these days do not require break-in at all, still you are recommended to follow the breaking-in period of your new car for better performance.

Try to go for the first oil change sooner than expected, since the worn off edges during the break-in period go in the oil. Another important point to keep in mind is that, for first 800 km or so, do not rev the car above 3,000-3,500 rpm.

Make sure that you get the first 5 consecutive servicing done at regular time intervals with the first one quite early after your purchase. During the break-in period, do not follow a consistent speed or gear shift. Expose your new car to variations in speed. Driving in urban traffic is the best for this.
