I am a resident of Bangalore and my daily commuting covers at least 40 km. Keeping in mind the petrol price hike, I am considering a gas kit. Which one should I opt for, LPG or CNG?

Dear friends.........getting a LPG kit fitted is useless bcoz LPG is costing u round 55 rupees a ltr and the average with LPG will be 25-30% less than petrol. so all together there wont be much difference in running cost of vehicle. so better go for Diesel engine or be with petrol. CNG would have been the best choice bt there is no CNG in bangalore

You can opt for CNG as it ensures that the car delivers better mileage and lowers the running cost by a huge margin compared to LPG. However, you should also keep in mind that the former does emit some Green House Gases (GHG) and, thus, is not exactly environment friendly. Nevertheless, as a purified combustible gas, it emits fewer pollutants than its petrol or diesel counterparts.

Since both the options have their own sets of pros and cons, it all boils down to your requirements. However, personally I will suggest you to go for LPG kit. A LPG kit can be installed from any garage or mechanic, as it does not require any special skills. The car's performance too will remain unhampered as there is no need to tweak the powertrain while installing this kit.

I will suggest you to go for LPG kit plainly due to its large scale availability, ease of installation and convenience in refilling the cylinder. CNG, being a commercial fuel, is not readily available and the lines at CNG pumps can be quite long, though it offers better mileage.

It is advisable to opt for CNG if you have a CNG station nearby since out of the two options you mentioned, CNG is safer and offering better mileage as well. LPG was criticised a lot in the initial phase as its kits were centred on cylinders used domestically that are unsafe; however, the newer kits come with safer cylinders.

LPG is the better choice of the two, since CNG kits cost at least Rs. 50,000 extra as compared to LPG. This figure would not be possible to break even in your case for at least 5-6 years as the fuel costs Rs. 22 per kg and the distance you cover is just 40 km.
